How To Care for Sun Damaged hair

Who doesn’t love the bronze glow your skin gets from a vacation in the sun, water, and sand? However,
our hair can suffer from the elements we love, and is often left dull, dry, lifeless, and damaged. Recently,
I chatted with hair care expert Brenda Duncan, with Monat Premier Hair Care. We discussed tips and
solutions for keeping your hair healthy, hydrated, and happy while getting your glow on…

Is sun damaging to your hair?

Yes! Like skin, the sun and heat zap hair of vital hydration. When hair is dehydrated, it is more vulnerable to damage and breakage. Look for hair care products that feature CrodasorbTM, which helps protect your hair from UV damage, much like a sunscreen protects your skin.

Should you wash your hair more in the summer?

That is a great question! You should wash your hair whenever you feel the need to. If you are spending
loads of time outdoors, or in the pool or surf, then definitely wash afterward. After pool time, try a
clarifying shampoo to help rid the hair of chlorine build up. If you’re in the pool a lot, use the clarifying
shampoo once a week. When you do wash, use warm water, instead of hot. The heat can pull needed
moisture from the hair. By using hair care that helps to maintain a healthy balance of clean and
moisture, and does not contain harmful ingredients, you may just find that you don’t need to shampoo
as often as you once did. Instead, add a little dry shampoo for quick touch-ups. Monat dry shampoo, The
Champ, also contains a touch of styling product to give you great looking ‘second-day’ hair! Dry locks
don’t need to wash daily. Use a hydrating shampoo and try a leave-in conditioner for extra moisture.

What is your number one tip a person can do to protect hair before swimming?

My number one tip to protect hair before swimming is to apply a leave-in conditioner before you enter
the water. Your hair will absorb the conditioner instead of the salt or chlorinated water. You won’t
experience the dry and dull feeling after your swim. Use a small amount of the same leave in conditioner
added to a spray bottle of water, mixing well. Then spray over your hair after swimming for an easy
comb out.

Can I do anything to protect my color when out in the sun?

To protect your hair color when you are in the sun, begin by using good hair care before you even think
about vacation, sun, and summer! Use products that leave out harmful chemicals, such as sulfates and
parabens. Look for products that do not use harmful fragrances, instead using loads of natural
ingredients and contain CrodasorbTM, for UV protection. Before sun exposure, use a good quality leave-in
conditioner, to help protect your hair investment. You’ll have hair color that is less dull, has a
beautiful shine, and lasts longer.

What is your favorite summer hair care product?

My favorite summer hair care product is Heavenly Hydrating Masque, by Monat. It does double duty by
replenishing hair with hydration and needed moisturizing. Summer can rid hair of what it needs to stay
healthy, by way of sun, wind, salt, chlorine, and even air conditioning. Give your hair a nice tall drink of
water with this masque.

What advice would you give to people that spend a lot of time outside in the summer?

If you’re spending a lot of time outdoors in the summer, I would advise you to use high quality, naturally
based hair care. Look for products that offer UV protection, and if possible, wear a hat to protect the
scalp. Pretreat hair when going into salt or chlorinated water, and give lots of hydration to your hair
after exposure to the elements. Be sure to use the best products for your hair type. Take the hair care

These are such great tips! I think I forget sometimes that I need to treat my hair differently depending on what season it is. I love the idea of putting in a leave-in conditioner before swimming in a pool. I will be bookmarking this to refer back to later!

I had honestly never thought about the damage the sun could be having on my hair. Thanks for bringing it to my attention! I stopped blow-drying my hair over a year ago now because I found it to damaging. Totally going to be looking into those products to replenish 🙂

Danielle, I understand! You should try our Blow Out Cream!!! It protects from the heat of the blow dryer and heat tools, leaves a beautiful shine to your hair, and cuts down on the time it takes for your hair to dry. Queue angels singing… 😀 It’s good stuff. Really informative…! I had no clue that sun damages our hairs this much. I mostly use the washable conditioner but the leave-in conditioner is also a good idea. Thanks for the tips 🙂

I don’t usually have issues with sun damage but I have naturally curly hair that tends to dry out. I just try to avoid chemicals and keep my curls moist.
