Secrets Playa Mujeres Resort review
I recently spent 8 wonderful days at Secrets in sunny Playa Mujeres. If you have not heard of Playa Mujeres it is a resort community just north of Cancun. Bordered on one side by the Mexican Caribbean and the other by a protected wetlands wildlife preserve. This area offers some beautiful white sand beaches as well as stunning views of the natural landscape. The area is also home to one of the best golf courses in Cancun, the Greg Norman-designed Playa Mujeres Golf Club. This area is designed for luxury travel and is a far cry from the spring break “party crowd” of nearby Cancun.
Located in a gated resort community about 35 minutes north of the Cancun airport you will find Secrets Playa Mujeres. This is an adult only (18 years and over) resort. The grounds are an impressive mix of high-end resort blended with the natural beauty of the protected nature preserves flora and fauna. The resort offers a unique layout in which the main check-in area, spa, and some of the shops and restaurants are located at one end of the nature preserve and the main resort grounds, rooms, more shops, and restaurants are located a short walk or golf cart ride away, on the other side of the preserve. Golf carts run continuously, and we never had to wait more than a few minutes for one to arrive. I personally loved this layout as it made it feel like we were “going out” without actually leaving the resort. Another bonus, in my opinion, was the opportunity to watch for local wildlife. During the day we spotted several Iguanas sunning themselves and if you are lucky at night you might catch a glimpse of a fox or raccoon as you cruise by in one of the many 6 passenger golf carts.
One big perk of staying at Secrets Playa Mujeres is that it is located next door to its sister resort Dreams Playa Mujeres. Guests of Secrets are allowed free access to Dreams, a family-friendly resort. This doubles your pool and dining options!
If you have a small dog and hate to leave him or her at home then good news! Both secrets and Dreams allow small dogs (under 25 lbs.)
Secrets Playa Mujeres offers 424 rooms. All rooms are smoke-free and spacious. Each room has a large bathroom with jacuzzi tubs big enough for two and a sitting area with a couch and table and chairs for two. The beds are very comfortable in my opinion. You can choose between a balcony room or a swim out. Both the balcony and terrace of the swim outs have seating, some balcony rooms offer hot tubs on the balcony.
The resort also offers master suites, 2 bedroom suites, and suites with private plunge pools. Very nice!
The Preferred Club
When booking your room you have the option to upgrade to the preferred club. Preferred Club rooms are usually larger and offer better views than the standard rooms. The real bonus for booking a preferred club room is access to the preferred club lounge, priority check-in, and access to the awesome beach front cabana beds. If you want to be treated like a celebrity book a preferred club room. You will also receive upgraded mini-bar service, access to preferred dining options, upgraded bath amenities, and free in room wifi.
Restaurants and Bars
I have personally eaten at every restaurant at this resort and can tell you the food is FABULOUS! You have 6 a la carte restaurants to choose from as well as a poolside grill and a buffet. As an added bonus you also have access to 10 more dining options at the Dreams resort next door. For a full review with photos of the dining options offered click here.
The resort offers several bars to choose from as well. Over by the main pool area you have the pool bar and the Sugar Reef bar. The pool bar closes at 6:00 pm but the Sugar Reef bar stays open until 10 or 11. Down by the ocean, they have a bar with swings for seats, I believe that bar closed around 6 pm. They also have a Piano bar open until 11:00 p.m. by the pool area.
Over by the main check-in area, they have a rooftop lounge and the Desires bar. The Desires bar is a sports bar during the day and early evening and then converts to the dance club at night. Across from the Bordeaux restaurant is an outside lounge/ bar that had live music at night. It is a great place to have a before or after dinner drink.
Secrets Playa Mujeres has an impressive white sand beach. The water is that Caribbean blue that you have to see to believe. They do a magnificent job on keeping the seaweed cleaned up and walking into the water was nice soft sand as far as I ventured in (about up to my knees). They also have jet ski rentals and parasailing available at a cost. Kayaks and snorkeling gear are provided for free.
The pool area has 3 hot tubs as well as an oceanfront infinity pool. A swim-up pool bar is located in the very large main pool. Floats are available upon request and constant bar service is offered throughout the entire pool and beach areas.
Pool and beach volleyball, fun pool games, water aerobics, and a bike tour are a few of the daytime activities offered. They also have daily Spanish lessons at 10:00 am. In the afternoon they change out the activities each day. Some that were offered on our trip were a darts tournament, bingo, cigar rolling, and tequila tasting.
Things shut down around 11:00 p.m. so if you are looking for a wild nightlife this might not be the place for you. They do offer a nightclub with dancing until 2:00 am over by the main check-in and spa area but the bars in the area near the rooms all close at 11:00 p.m. Each night the resort offers an outdoor movie under the stars and also a different show each night. Shows that we saw included a Rock Legends show, American Idol type show, a Mexican dance show, a fire show, and a variety show with many different performers. The resort also brings in local vendors once or twice a week. This gives you the opportunity to shop for some great souvenirs without ever leaving the resort.
